Kurnell is a significant site as a meeting place for the Gweagal (the Aboriginal people living on the southern shore of Kamay Botany Bay). The Dharawal Country name for Kurnell  kundle. It is also the place of the first meeting between the Aboriginal people and the British who arrived on the Endeavour in 1770.
