Whales of the Gweagal

A celebration of the Whales of the Gweagal took place at Oak Park, Cronulla on Sunday 20th October 2019.

Aunt Barb Simms-Keely and Aunt Deanna Schreiber,  welcomed everyone to the site.

Bruce Howell was the MC for the morning. Dean Kelly shared some deep insights into his culture.

Mayor Carmello Pesce unveiled a plaque with the story of the whales.

Ngaran Ngaran, a mens dancing group shared their  culture through dancing and singing.  A smoking ceremony was  part of the event.

The local Aboriginal community shared wattle seed biscuits, johnny cakes, oysters and fish served on paperbark. The event was attended by hundreds of people and supported by the Sutherland Shire Council.
